“White Collar” (The USA Network)

“White Collar” appeared out of nowhere last year on the USA Network schedule and was an immediate hit. The story about the con man and the FBI agent somehow struck a nerve with audiences and became one of the USA Network’s biggest successes ever joining the ranks of “Psych,” “Burn Notice,” “Royal Pains” and “In Plain Sight.”

The show ended its initial run with a major cliffhanger. Neal Caffrey, the con man now working as an advisor to the FBI, was still searching for his long lost love Kate. He knew she was being held by someone and he had recently learned that man was an FBI employee. In the final scene the audience discovered this person to be Peter Burke (Tim DeKay), the FBI Agent with whom Neal works most closely. It was a shock and a half and left viewers stunned.

The first episode of the new season opens with Neal and Peter still working closely together but with Neal growing more and more suspicious of Peter. His friend Mozzie (Willie Garson) adds to his paranoia by giving him logical reasons why it could be Peter.

By the end of the episode you get an answer of sorts, but you also get a full story about stock market cheats. Neal is drafted to infiltrate a group whose main goal is cheating people out of their life savings. Peter also goes undercover in this caper.

The show has plenty of action, some snappy dialogue, and of course the underlining mystery of Kate. Suffice it to say this season gets off with a roaring start. DeKay and Bomer are still great in their roles and do have an easy camaraderie. My only complaint is they don’t use Tiffani Thiesen enough as Peter’s wife. I also hope they will bring back Diahann Carroll as Neal’s landlady of sorts.

“White Collar” used to be seen on Friday nights but now it has shifted to Tuesday. Make sure you follow it there. It premieres on Tuesday, January 19 at 10PM on the USA Network.
