“Witchville” (Syfy)
“Witchville” is another Saturday night at the movies feature on the Syfy Channel. It is a cheesy tale of witch hunting that seems to take place on another planet for there appears to be two moons in the sky at night. The cast is made up of no-names – Luke Goss, Ed Speleers and MyAnna Buring. Strangely enough this exposure, even in a bad movie, might give them a career boost as they all play their parts capably.
The one star of the show is Sarah Douglas. She has had a degree of success in the movie business because of her role in the “Superman” movie of 1978. She worked alongside Terrance Stamp as one of the villains in that Christopher Reeve epic.
In this new movie she plays the Red Queen, a witch who wants to take over the world. Her main adversary is King Malachy (Goss) who vows to kill her to protect his people. His best friend Jason (Speleers) comes along for the ride and gets a chance to meet Jozefa (Buring) the Queen’s daughter.
Malachy and his guys look like they are part of the Roman Army of days gone by, but they also meets a group of warriors who appear to be kung fu specialists. Then there is the witch hunter Kramer (Simon Thorp) who looks like he stepped out of the Arabian Nights cast. It is that kind of film in that you get a little bit of everything.
Even stranger is the fact that midway through the film you find out Malachy and Jozefa are twins, with her being the older by a few minutes. Strangely Buring is in her twenties while Goss is in his forties. It just doesn’t compute.
It is those kinds of faux pas that make the movie fun, and it is fun in a dreadful sort of way. If you want to have a party and jeer at the on screen action then this is the movie to use. Between the witches, the kung fu, the miscast actors, etc it is a party of fumbles.
You don’t expect a lot from these Syfy Saturday night movies and in this case you don’t get a lot. The movie certainly doesn’t deserve a cast as talented as these actors. They give it their all but still the movie comes up short.
If you just want a movie to scream and jeer at then this is the one to watch. It is “Witchville” and it premieres Saturday night, May 22 at 9 on the Syfy Channel. |
