"Manticore" (SciFi Channel)
The SciFi Channel unleashes another original movie designed to satisfy members of their viewing audience who like suspenseful situations and creepy monsters. "Manticore" fills that bill in every possible way.
Robert Beltran and Heather Donahue star in this movie that is set in modern times during the Iraq War. Beltran plays the sergeant in charge of a unit of troops in combat and Donahue is his corporal. Jeff Fahey plays their commander.
Beltran's unit is seeking out terrorists and sympathizers in Iraq when he is ordered to head to a small town in Iraq and locate a TV news reporter and her cameraman. They have gone missing.
Once his unit gets to the town they find the village has been virtually decimated by some one or some thing. There are bodies everywhere. Eventually they learn that a fierce creature has been unleashed by a centuries old curse. This beast is virtually unkillable.
This movie seems to be a step above the usual SciFi fare in production values. The acting is good and the special effects are acceptable. The film is timed to have an attack by the beast at about every fifteen minutes so the anticipation factor is effective.
If you are a fan of this type of movie, and there are a lot of you out there who are, this is a fairly good one to watch. It isn't overly scary but there is enough tension to keep you tuned once you start the film. Beltran and Donahue do alright in their roles. They won't win any awards but they don't embarrass themselves either.
"Manticore" is what it is. It makes for a satisfying fright night on the SciFi Channel.
"Manticore" premieres on Saturday, November 26 at 9PM on the SciFi Channel. |
