"Stargate: Atlantis" (The SCI FI Channel)

The good news is that the successful series "Stargate: SG-1" has spawned a spin-off titled "Stargate: Atlantis." The better news is that this spin-off is just as good as the original. Now there are two excellent science fiction series on the SCI FI Channel.

In the new show a "Stargate" is located in Antarctica. It is discovered to be the gate to the lost city of Atlantis. There is only enough power to send an expedition crew on a one way journey, but this doesn't daunt the volunteers. They are more than willing to go.

The team is headed by Dr. Elizabeth Weir (Torri Higginson). Her second in command is Major John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan). Once they arrive at Atlantis they are immediately put in danger. A terrible race of aliens called the Wraith reside there and feed off human lives. The team must do battle with them and also look for a new source of power for Atlantis. One that also might hopefully get them home at some point in the future.

Flanigan is key to the success of the show. He, like Richard Dean Anderson of "Stargate: SG-1," has the likeable personality necessary to draw viewers. He has an easy-going attitude and enough charm for any two lead actors.

Robert Patrick guest stars in the first episode and brings his star power to bear. He is like a good luck charm for sci-fi adventures as he was in "Terminator 2" as well as "The X-Files."

"Stargate: Atlantis" gets off to a great start with this first episode. If future installments match this one for entertainment value then the series will be a smash.

Catch the premiere episode on the SCI FI Channel, July 19 at 9PM.
