"The L Word" (SHOWTIME)

SHOWTIME is the cable home of "Queer As Folk," a controversial series which looks at the life of gay men in America. Now SHOWTIME is adding another series to its roster and this one is called "The L Word." It is a look at the lesbian community in America and stars Jennifer Beals and Pam Grier among others.

The series focuses on a group of women who live in Los Angeles. The main focus is on Bette Porter (Beals) and Tina Kennard (Laurel Holloman) a female couple who are trying to conceive a child. The problem is finding a donor and also being mentally stable for the responsibility that will ensue.

Living next door to them are Tim Haspel (Eric Mabius) and his girlfriend Jenny (Mia Kirshner). Jenny has just moved to LA after graduating from college and wants to be a writer. She is a little naïve and finds herself overwhelmed by the women who live in Tim's neighborhood. Soon she finds herself attracted to Marina (Karin Lombard) who runs a West Hollywood café.

As the series progresses these stories and several more will be followed. The romances and entanglements are bound to become even more complex and more shocking. The series has some graphic language and a good bit of nudity.

What will make this series worth watching, other than for the controversial aspects, is the high caliber of the acting. Beals, Grier and Lombard are standouts while Kirshner has a way of drawing attention to her character at every turn.

"The L Word" is a TV series about which you will be hearing much discussion in the next few weeks. Get in on the heat from the first episode so you will know what is happening.

"The L Word" premieres on SHOWTIME January 18 at 10PM.
