"Comic Book Comes To Life"
"Sin City" was a graphic novel before it became a movie directed by Roberto Rodriguez, and the look and feel of that book permeates the look and feel of the movie. Bruce Willis, Clive Owen, Mickey Roarke, Jessica Alba and Brittany Murphy are just a few of the stars who inhabit the characters who live and die in this violent film.
The film is basically three stories in one, and they are held together by their relationship to the locale of Sin City. In this city of broken dreams deals are made and lives are lost, hearts are broken and dreams are shattered. It is all told with comic book garishness and a taste for the more violent elements of society.
The acting is solid with Roarke being as good as he was in his earlier years. Willis is stuck with playing a role that demands a much older actor. Murphy and Alba add beauty to the show as well as gritty talent.
"Sin City" may be a little dark and violent for your taste but if you can stand the heat you might like this movie. It is available on DVD so head down to the video store for a chance to visit one of the roughest towns around - Sin City.
If you want to ease on down the yellow brick road you can also pick up a copy of "The Muppet's Wizard of Oz." Ashanti gets the Dorothy role while muppets Kermit, Fozzie and Gonzo play the Scarecrow, the Lion and the Tin Thing. Miss Piggy is on hand as all the witches and of course she steals the show.
This film is based on the L Frank Baum classic and the DVD has extra footage not shown in the TV version. So you get everything from the TV movie and more, and that means more fun, laughs and family entertainment. So follow the yellow brick road or the lone highway or whatever it takes to get to the video store. But go there and get "The Muppet's Wizard of Oz."
You can also pick up "The Muppet Show Season One." This season had twenty-four episodes and the muppet bunch was in rare form in all of these shows. Miss Piggy, Kermit, the Swedish Chef, and many more were all on hand; as were guest stars such as Jim Nabors, Phyllis Diller, Lena Horne and Joel Grey.
Talent abounds and so does enjoyment. Get "The Muppets: Season One" and get all the fun a barrel of muppets can give.
On the animated front there is "Pam Poko," an adventure from the Japanese animation studios. In this film the modern world is encroaching on the world of a group of raccoons. Rather than give up the animals decide to transform themselves into human figures and fight back.
This film provides a lesson in the balance of mankind and the wilderness as well as purely enjoyable entertainment. The voices of Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Clancy Brown and Olivia d'Abo are used to add to the fun and believability of the film.
Finally what is better than a treat like a new collection of Scooby Doo adventures. In "What's New Scooby-Doo? Vol 6: Monster Matinee" there are four spooky adventures to keep you entertained.
This time out the gang goes to New Mexico, Little Tokyo, San Francisco, and a town where a Halloween Festival is taking place. Fred, Scooby, Velma, Daphne and Freddie are on hand to solve the mysteries and have some fun.
Make sure your kids get to watch their favorite crime solvers. They are in rare form and rare fun. Don't miss it. |
