"For The Love Of A Dog"

Kate DiCamillo's novel BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE is beloved by thousands of avid readers. The story touched the hearts of readers and her fine writing style kept their attention. No wonder the movie version of this book was highly anticipated.

It is now available on DVD and retains the charm of the movie and more. Annasophia Robb plays the motherless girl who takes in the stray dog she names Winn-Dixie. Her preacher father (Jeff Daniels) at first says no but even he is eventually won over.

The warm relation between these two and the dog, plus a town full of eccentric and unique characters, makes this a movie to watch over and over. Dave Matthews, Cicely Tyson and Eva Marie Saint co-star in the movie.

On the DVD there is also a gag reel, commentaries and other "special" extras. They enhance the movie experience. It is all PG rated fun and enjoyment so watch the movie and the extras as well.

For horror fans this week brings "Urban Legends: Bloody Mary." This film stars Robert Vito, Kate Mara and Tina Lifford (Wait!, isn't that the "Survivor" lady? What is she doing in the movies!)

The plot has a group of high school girls conjuring up the dead. When they are tormented by a group of jocks they plot their revenge. This involves using the "conjuree" to get revenge. And it is all tied in with urban legends.

This type of movie has a built in audience and they will love every frame of the film. Watching it at home with a group of friends makes it even more fun. So plan a chilling night by watching "Urban Legends: Bloody Mary."

Almost as horrifying is the release of the TV movie "When Billie Beat Bobby." The film stars Holly Hunter as Billie Jean King and Ron Silver as Bobby Rigs. Back in 1973 the rivalry between these two captured the attention of the nation. Billie Jean King was a champion in the world of women's tennis and Bobby Riggs was a so-so player on the men's circuit.

Still when these two announced this "battle of the sexes" the nation's eyes were riveted on them. The movie captures the hoopla and carnival like atmosphere that surrounded the "duel." No one should have taken it seriously but a lot of people did. The movie captures that aspect too.

Hunter and Silver are good in their roles and the movie is a lot of fun. Plus it captures the 70's perfectly.

In today's world of corporate rivalry and espionage in business, a movie like "Cypher" was bound to be made. Jeremy Northam and everybody's favorite "angel" Lucy Liu co-star. It all concerns the world of big business and the compromises we make with our integrity to relieve the boredom of everyday life or just to get ahead.

Northam and Liu are appealing as well as interesting in their roles, and maintain the surprises and the suspense that comes from the script. This is one compelling movie so don't miss it.

Suspense is also generated in "Momentum," a story of a man with telekinetic powers. He is used by two FBI agents (Louis Gossett, Jr and Teri Hatcher) but they are competing against each other. Each says he must trust and work with him/her but who does he trust?

This was the type of B grade movie Teri Hatcher was reduced to making before "Desperate Housewives" came along. Still it is fun to see her in this type of suspenseful role.

John Mellincamp is the star of another suspenseful film out on DVD. This one is titled "After Image" and concerns a woman with psychic powers of a sort. She can envision an upcoming murder and it is up to Mellincamp's character to head it off. But the vision or the "after image" isn't clear enough for him to make a judgment.

Louise Fletcher of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" fame co-stars in this twisted tale. She can always generate chills just by turning on that fixed stare she has in her repertoire.
