"Tommy Lee Jones Mans the House"
A few months ago a movie was released in theaters titled "Man of the House." It got little attention even though the star of the movie was everybody's favorite Tommy Lee Jones. Most people just couldn't see him in a comedy but they were wrong. Jones nailed the role of the Texas Ranger who has to baby-sit five cheerleaders when they witness a murder.
Jones not only gives the movie its dramatic respect, but he also uses his basset hound looks to play the situation for laughs. It is an all round enjoyable performance and now that the movie is out on DVD hopefully more people will discover it.
So mark this down - Tommy Lee Jones in "Man of the House." It will give you a pleasant night's worth of entertainment. Cedric the Entertainer is also listed in the cast but he has only a cameo. So does Anne Archer. It is Tommy Lee Jones' show all the way.
For those of you who love "anime" and many of you do, there is a new video out titled "Steamboy." This animated movie tells the story of a young boy who is a prodigy in the field of invention/science. He discovers a metal ball that is capable of powering vast stretches of civilization.
Once it is received the inventor is in danger. There are forces that want this "ball" and want to use it for evil purposes. It is up to the inventor to save the day and the world.
"Steamboy" is one of the most expensive Japanese projects ever and it shows on the screen. For the English version the voices of Anna Paquin, Patrick Stewart and Alfred Molina are used. They bring credibility to their performances and make the anime film even more dramatic than it otherwise would be.
This is a DVD to discover and then tell your friends about. They will be impressed that you were one of the first to know how good it is.
You can get DVD versions of "Not Another Teen Movie" in R rated and Unrated formats. How dirty you want the movie to be will govern your choice.
The movie itself tells the story of a high school jock named Zack. Zack bets his friends that he can transform the nerdy Jane into a beauty and he does. Does this movie sound familiar" Well it was played straight in another version but this is the one that sends up all those kinds of movies.
The cast includes Jaime Pressley, Mia Kirschner, Chris Evans and Molly Ringwall.
Joan Allen and Kevin Costner star in the dark comedy "The Upside of Anger." This movie has Allen playing a not grieving widow and Costner playing the washed up ballplayer who lives next door. Allen's character has several daughters and each brings her own set of problems to the family.
The complexities of life are the framework for the film and it does have some funny moments, but it has some serious ones too. Allen and Costner are both very good in their roles and the film is enjoyable though not up to Costner's earlier standards.
Finally there is "Baby Wordsworth." This is a movie for any parent of a small child. It deals with a baby's need to form words and to communicate. It uses puppets to make its points.
Marlee Matlin also appears in the film and helps instruct in written, verbal and sign language. As we saw in "Meet the Fockers" using sign language with babies is the latest thing. So get "Baby Wordsworth" and get started. |
