"Remembering"
With the anniversary of "9/11" just having passed, it is a time to think about all the events that transpired on that date five years ago. One of the most poignant was the story of the passengers on United Airlines Flight 93. Their heroic actions should be remembered throughout eternity, and their story is told in the film "United 93" that is now out on DVD.
Many people still feel it is too soon for this story to be told. For those who disagree, this film is a faithful retelling of the story of those who sacrificed their lives so that the Capitol or other buildings in Washington would not be destroyed along with countless lives.
In the film we see each event as it transpired from boarding to the final revolution. The individual characters are not so much identified as they are all viewed as a group. For some this may be a negative, but for others it makes the film more watchable. In any event the heroics are the focal point and what we want to see.
Having this film on DVD makes it accessible to many who would not go to a theater for a viewing. In the privacy of their homes they can watch and weep at will. So get your copy and watch it as is best for you.
Another good movie released this week is the original version of "All the King's Men." A new version with Sean Penn and Jude Law will be in theaters in a few weeks so take this chance to see the original. Broderick Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge star in Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize winning story of greed and political corruption in Louisiana.
In 1949 this film won an Academy Award as Best Picture of the year; Crawford was the winner as Best Actor; and McCambridge took home the prize for Best Supporting Actress. That is a lot of acclaim for one film so you can see it is worth your viewing time.
Another area of the country that is not what it appears is Rockwell Falls - the setting for the film "Population 436." This seems like the idyllic place to live and if so why hasn't the population grown? Jeremy Sisto plays a federal investigator sent to look into this very issue.
You have heard the saying, "If I told you I'd have to kill you," well finding out the secret of this town may be the death of him. There are facts that are horrendous hiding beneath the surface.
"Population 436" is a chiller of a film and one worth watching.
With the imminent start of Season 3 of "Lost," now is the perfect time to go back and review "Season 2. "Lost: The Complete Second Season - The Extended Experience" DVD has just been released and it has all of the episodes plus eight hours of "extra" material. You can lose yourself in this DVD for hours upon hours of entertainment and fun.
For "Lost" fans this is mandatory viewing. And by the time you are finished the third season will be ready to begin. So get started watching all of this material NOW!
Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church star in the western drama "Broken Trail." If any two actors are perfect for a western movie they are the ones. The film concerns a man and his nephew starting out on a horse drive during the last days of the old west. But what is merely a horse drive soon turns into a rescue mission with both men's lives being on the line.
If you love westerns, and a lot of us do, then this is a great film for you to watch over and over. Duvall is at his best and when he is at the top of his game he is unbeatable.
Stephen King's main rival in the horror genre is Clive Barker. His story, "The Plague," is the basis for a movie now on DVD. James Van Der Beek and Dee Wallace star in this story of teenagers who have been in a deep coma and wake to start causing terror to everyone and everything around them.
Why were they in the ten year coma? What is wrong with them now? What is the mission they now find themselves on? And can they be stopped? The answer to all these questions lies in "Clive Barker's The Plague."
Tia and Tamera Mowry co-star in the new Disney film "Twitches." They play sisters with supernatural powers who don't know each other until their 21st birthday (Halloween). They were separated at birth and now have come together to save the world from dark forces.
This is a fun film for kids and the DVD has a lot of extras for added enjoyment. One of which is an alternate ending. So get this one for your kids and start having fun with it immediately. |
