"Stuck"
The driving force behind the Cheerleading film "Bring It On" was Jessica Bindinger. Now she is the driving force behind "Stick It," a film now out on DVD about the world of girls' gymnastics. Both films are full of energy and enthusiasm but this time out the story and message are muddled. You get an overall solid story line but the details are missing, at least in the background of the characters and the motivations of the coaches.
Missy Peregrym plays Haley Graham, a seventeen-year-old girl who was once a contender for gymnastic glory. She walked away while at her peak and became a troubled youth. Now she has run afoul of the law and a strict judge (Polly Holliday) has sentenced her to attend a gymnastics school. The coach there is Burt Vickerman (Jeff Bridges) who knows all about Haley's past.
Haley is one of those girls who can bring it on but isn't really motivated. That is what Burt's job is to do. To motivate her and make her a better person. We've all seen this story a million times in the past. Sometimes it can work and sometimes it doesn't. "Stick It" gets stuck in between the good and the bad - and comes out middling entertainment.
Believe it or not the film/DVD titled "I Am A Sex Addict" is a documentary. Caveh Zahedi is the writer, director and star of the film that details this man's obsession with women. He makes the documentary sort of a confession of his actions and his obsessions.
This non-rated film focuses on the humor in the situations and that is its saving grace. Whether or not you want to share Zahedi's daring confessions is a matter of taste. One thing for sure, this is a different type of movie than what you usually see.
If you are in the mood for an inspiring sports movie (and we seem to have had a lot of them lately), try "Goal! The Dream Begins." The movie/DVD stars Kuno Becker as a young man from Los Angeles' poorer section who dreams of being a soccer star.
His family is totally non-supportive and thinks he should settle for an ordinary life. But the young man is determined and even goes to England to try to gain a berth as a player on a top soccer team. Does he make his dream come true - well watch the DVD and learn the answer to that and other questions.
Also starring in the film are Allessandro Nivola, Stephen Dillane and Anna Friel. They help bring this story of one man's dream to life.
A companion piece to "Goal!" is "The Miracle Match." This is the true story of the 1950 World Cup soccer match. The opponents were the United States and Great Britain, and you can guess who was favored to win. But remember this is a true story so all that happens has to be believed.
Gerard Butler, Wes Bentley and Zachery Ty Bryan are some of the stars on hand. They perform believably and make the DVD have some heart-stopping moments.
Heart stopping moments and heat seeking moments can be found on "Grey's Anatomy: The Complete Second Season - Uncut." Now that the new season has just started you can take a few hours - days maybe - and go back over the entire second season plus extras.
This is the show that has captured America's heart and mind. From Meredith to McDreamy to Callie and Georgia; oh yes and oh that Sandra Oh. It is all there plus extras so get it and watch it today.
Finally for the kids we have "Disney Halloween Preschool: Sing Along Songs: Happy Haunting." The songs that are featured on this easy to sing along with DVD are connected to Halloween. So you get a little spookiness, a little silliness, and a whole lot of happiness.
Get ready for the Halloween fun with this kid delightful DVD. |
