“Another Movie About Evil”

“The Covenant” is another movie about evil and it will probably find a larger audience on the DVD than it did at the movie houses. It has no stars, and only a semblance of a plot but it does have super special effects and a hard-hitting musical soundtrack. That is why I say it might find a fan base one way or the other on DVD. Stranger things have been known to happen. The fact it is directed by Renny Harlin of "Cliffhanger" and "Die Hard 2" fame might bring in some viewers.

In the film, four friends are at a private high school. They seem to have a pact between them to take care of each other. They include Caleb Danvers (Steven Strait), Pogue Parry (Taylor Kitsch), Reid Garwin (Toby Hemingway) and Tyler Sims (Chace Crawford). When newcomer Chase Collins (Sebastian Stan) tries to make friends with the group they are mildly cordial but don't welcome him into their circle.

Then when Chase seems to be hitting on Pogue's girlfriend Kate (Jessica Lucas) they really freeze him out. They don't want anyone getting too close and learning their secret. They are heirs to the powers of four men of Ipswich. Caleb has the most power and when he "ascends" on his eighteenth birthday he will have an extra amount of power.

Again the special effects are the key draw here, and the movie is one that can be fun to watch with your friends. Check it out!

A movie you will like even more is “Gridiron Gang” which stars “The Rock” in his best role ever.  Get out of the way Arnold, Jean Claude, Steven and all other action heroes - "The Rock" is on a roll. In this latest film "Gridiron Gang" he moves from being a wrestler who sometimes acts to an actor who once wrestled. This new movie gives Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson clout as an actor, and a wise chooser of scripts. This time his mind and his emotions are just as important as his brawn and his biceps.

Johnson plays Sean Porter, a real life individual who works with troubled kids in the Los Angeles area. He is a counselor at a correctional facility for teenage boys and tries his hardest to reach
these kids and get them back on the straight and narrow path. So far his efforts have not had too much success, as his return rate to the facility (or to the morgue) is about 75%.

Porter comes up with the idea of starting a football team. He meets opposition at every turn from his superiors as well as the coaches at other schools in the area. Still Porter is persistent and
eventually gets his team and his season.

This is a movie made even better because it is based on a true story. It is inspiring and enjoyable to watch. Don’t miss “Gridiron Gang.”

If you are in the mood for something a little raunchy and off-color, well that is the best way to describe “Artie Lange’s Beer League.” This new movie on DVD stars Artie Lange, Anthony De Sando, Laurie Metcalf and Ralph Macchio (as in “Karate Kid”).

The group in the movie is on a softball team. They are losers but are determined to bring their game up a notch. Sure. Oh well this is a movie and anything can happen. What is the key to the movie is that the beer flows and the raunchy jokes do to. How much you enjoy all this is a matter of taste, but don’t say you haven’t been warned.

“Van Gogh” is a movie, now on DVD, about the famous artist during the last months of his life.  Jacques Dutronc plays the artist in this examination of him and his relationships with people around him during the final portion of his life. It shows his complex relationship with his brother and also how life impacted on his art.

Van Gogh was a fascinating man and he makes an intriguing subject for a film of this type. It isn’t a fast paced movie but it is an interesting one that paints a complete portrait of the man and the artist.

The younger kids in your family will be excited because there is a new edition of “A Pup Called Scooby-Doo.” This is “Volume 5” and it has new adventures of the young pup and also young versions of Velma, Shaggy, Daphne and Fred.

There are four episodes on this DVD and they are all kid friendly and full of fun. Make sure you delight your children by getting your copy of “A Pup Named Scooby Do, Volume 5” fast!
