"Ferrell Outshines Carrey Again"
In the film "The Number 23" Jim Carrey tries to show what a great dramatic actor he is - it doesn't work. He really should head back to comedies where he can be appreciated. But even in comedy he has been stripped of his title of "The King of Comedy" by Will Ferrell. And this week the DVD of Ferrell's movie "Stranger Than Fiction" is in stores and it shows that Ferrell is a better dramatic actor than Carrey too.
Poor Carrey he is being stomped by Ferrell, but honestly in "Stranger Than Fiction" Ferrell shines. The plot of the movie concerns a writer named Kay Eiffel (Emma Thompson) and an IRS investigator named Harold Crick (Ferrell). He is an ordinary guy living an ordinary life until one day when he begins to hear a voice narrating his life. The voice belongs to Eiffel but Harold doesn't know this.
Eiffel is writing a story about a man named Harold Crick and her plot determines the way Crick's life goes. If Eiffel writes that he meets a girl, well Crick meets a girl. In his life that girl is one of his IRS auditees named Ana (Maggie Gyllenhaal). She hates him because he is auditing her, but he is strangely fascinated by her.
Harold's life progresses with him becoming more and more annoyed, irritated and puzzled by this mysterious voice. Eventually he hears the voice say that he is going to have to die. Now he really becomes concerned and takes every measure possible to try to solve who and what the voice is.
The movie is a fantasy but it is a believable one thanks mostly to Ferrell and Thompson. Director Marc Forster also has to be given credit for holding it all together. This is a DVD you can enjoy because it requires your attention but it is fully satisfactory in the end.
Another movie on DVD this week is "Heart of the Game." This is a very good documentary about the girls basketball team at Seattle's Roosevelt High School. It follows the school's team for a period of seven years and lets us watch the team grow and grow and get better and better.
Bill Resler is the coach of the team and he is a little bit different from most coaches. He is a little quirky and a little dangerous in some ways. He wants what is best for his team but he wants it on his terms. And when he comes up against headstrong but super talented Darnella Russell it is a battle to the finish.
Movies don't get more interesting than this documentary. Watch it and be impressed.
