“Here Come the Pirates”

Last year “Pirate Radio,” a new movie starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman, was advertised in theaters as coming soon. Sadly for most of us it never arrived. It played in a very limited amount of theaters and then disappeared. Now it is out on DVD and it was worth the wait, at least for me.

“Pirate Radio” is a very unique film. It takes place in the sixties and concerns an age when rock and roll was virtually illegal in Britain. Hard to believe but it was. A group of Disc Jockeys couldn’t tolerate this and came up with a plan to get the music out there.

They got themselves a boat and anchored it in the North Atlantic and from there they broadcast rock and roll forever. The British government was determined to shut this group down but the “rebels” were just as determined to play their music. So the conflict waged on.

Hoffman plays the leader of the rebel pack, a man known as “The Count.” It is a typical unique Hoffman performance. Bill Nighy and Rhys Ifans add solid support.

Remember “Super Troopers” and “Beerfest”? If these were your kind of movies then you are going to love “The Slammin’ Salmon,” a new to DVD movie starring Michael Clarke Duncan. In this film a huge tyrannical man called “Slammin’ Salmon” (Duncan) runs a restaurant called “The Slammin’ Salmon” where he terrorizes his wait staff. In order to make more money he makes his staff engage in a contest.

The winner will get $10,000 and the loser will get….well it won’t be pretty. This of course sends the staff into a frenzy as they try to win the prize and avoid being the looser. You can just imagine what all goes on as they try to sabotage their competitors. It is a sight not for the weak of heart.

“Tenure” is a Russell Crowe movie that I had never heard of until it appeared on my DVD list. It tells the story of a fifteen year old runaway (Sophie Taub) and the troubled young man she meets (Jon Foster). It is possible that he is even a serial killer. At least this is what a cop (Russell Crowe) who is in pursuit of him thinks.

The cop has been on the young man’s trail for a long time but now time is running out. He must capture him before he kills the innocent young girl. It is a tight race all the way down to the wire and is a matter of life and death all the way.

Finally there is “Defendor,” a movie that is a lot like the upcoming “Kickass.” In this new to DVD movie Woody Harrelson plays Arthur Poppington, a man who decides to take justice ands fighting evil into his own hands. He calls himself “Defendor” and he takes to the streets to clean up his city.

Harrelson is not my favorite actor and he does not win me over with this role. Others however may see it as a funny and entertaining film. Sandra Oh, Elias Koteas and Kat Dennings co-star and make the movie better than Harrelson can on his own.
