“You Can Always Count On Nic Cage”

It’s slim pickings at the DVD store this week but even when it seems no one else is making movies you can always count on Nic Cage. It seems like at least every other month he has a new one to view. This time it is “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans.”

In this film he plays a detective who has two loves in his life – his job and his drugs. Each passion allows him to excel in the other one. When Hurricane Katrina hits he is the man who takes care of the city of New Orleans. He does so with ruthlessness and passion.

There is also another love in the film and that is the prostitute who completes his life. She is as conscience driven and depraved as he is. Together they make their own laws and their own world.

Cage and the always fascinating Eva Mendes make this an interesting, if not always understandable, story of love and corruption. When the DVD pickings are slim to none you can always count on Nic to deliver.

Another title out this week is “The Collector.” In this film a robber becomes a hero of sorts when he stumbles into a crime in action. The house he is trying to rob has already been taken over by a masked “crazy” who is so evil he puts the robber into hero mode.

The film stars Josh Stewart and Andrea Roth. This one is not for the faint of heart so beware.

Finally there is “Dolan’s Cadillac.” This is another excitement themed flick. In this one Wes Bentley plays a young man whose wife is murdered. The murder was arranged by a cold and vicious man (Christian Slater) and now the young man is out for revenge.

This film is reputedly based on a short story by Stephen King and is better than you would think it would be. The plot is good and the acting is acceptable. Some days you find these little surprises among the dregs being offered.

There are three DVD’s that you probably haven’t seen in the movie theaters. You take what you are offered in weeks like these and hope next week brings something more substantial.
