"Computerized Beauty"

Its amazing what they can do with computers these days. There was a rumor recently that through the magic of computers, stars who are now dead could be digitized and made to star in new movies. Let's hope that doesn't happen! But in the new movie on video "Simone" a director creates a movie star out of computer graphics. And she takes the town by storm.

Al Pacino stars as the director who is so desperate for a hit that he is willing to use a "created" star to help sell his movies. Catherine Keener plays his ex-wife who is so busy running a studio that she fails to save her marriage. Evan Rachel Wood is their precocious daughter and Rachel Roberts is the beautiful "created" star.

The movie is fast and funny and clever to boot. It has a lot of "in" jokes about Hollywood but enough of the regular kind to keep you entertained. Plus Roberts is a very beautiful woman, graphics or not. And as an added treat you get Winona Ryder (where have you heard that name?) as a spoiled star who demands everything for her participation in a movie.

Also new to video this week is "Dinner Rush." This film concerns one night in a restaurant where a variety of people are eating. There are gangsters, police, restaurant critics, and assorted other guests. Their stories interweave and intertwine as the evening progresses until they erupt in a frenzy during the "dinner rush."

Danny Aiello is the star of the film. Vivian Wu, Kirk Acevedo, Sandra Bernhard and John Corbett are supporting players. They all help make the story as rich as the gooey desserts the restaurant serves.

A young wife follows her husband to a new land where she expects love and adventure await them. But somehow true love turns to hate and a lifetime turns to a few days shortened by death. There is passion, cruelty, and revenge in the new film to video "Edge of Madness."

The stars of this movie are Brendan Fehr, Paul Johansson and Caroline Dhavernas. They bring to life this exciting and turbulent story.

"Band of the Hand" comes out on DVD this week. It features a cast of actors who rose to greater prominence after this film was made. Laurence Fishburne, Stephen Lang, Lauren Holly and James Remar star in this tale about five young people from a rehabilitation school who band together to take on the crime lords of Miami.

Michael Mann directed this film and as he showed with "Miami Vice," he knows this city backwards and forwards. And he knows how to make an action film.

Finally for the kids there is "Spongebob Squarepants: Tales From the Deep" and "Rugrats: Mysteries." Spongebob has an encounter with 177 of his closest friends as well as other adventures. The Rugrats have an adventure on a train. Both videos contain multiple episodes and are sure to be kid pleasers.
