"Dana Carvey Disappears"
Dana Carvey is one of the semi-success stories from "Saturday Night Live." He didn't have the instant fame of a Chevy Chase or the idol stature of a John Belushi; but he has been around a while and he is still here. Recently he had some health problems but those are behind him now and he has made a movie which it is out on video. It is titled "Master of Disguise" and it might make Carvey disappear forever.
In this film Carvey plays Pistacio, a member of the famous Disguisey family. His father (James Brolin) tries to protect him from his spy work but when he and Pistacio's mother are kidnapped Pistacio has to try out different disguises in an effort to rescue them. Jennifer Esposito plays his assistant.
The movie is stupid from start to finish. And it isn't funny. Now that's a deadly combination. The plot wanders around and seems to be made up as the movie goes along. The acting is tiresome with Carvey wearing out his welcome in the first few minutes. Where he is ordinarily likeable in all his roles, in this one he is tedious and boring.
"Master of Disguise" is a fairly tame film which means the kiddies can watch it. The question is, would they want to? They might get a chuckle or two out of the silliness but for all others this is the film that might make Carvey disappear from his Hollywood career forever.
"Formula 51" doesn't do anything to enhance Samuel L Jackson's career either. It is a lighthearted action movie about a man who discovers a new designer drug. He takes it across the water to try to find a backer or buyer in Liverpool. There he meets Robert Carlyle and the two of them get caught up in some double-dealing.
Jackson is a man who has made some great movies. It is sad seeing him something as mundane as this one. The same can be said for Carlyle. Both of these men should have had better sense and better taste than get messed up in this. The formula for success in the movies is "not appearing in movies like 'Formula 51'."
A little bit better than "Formula 51" which was a little bit better than "Master of Disguise" is "Serving Sara." This movie at least has the delectable Elizabeth Hurley, and that is saying a lot. It also has Matthew Perry of "Friends" fame.
Perry plays a process server. He has been hired by Sara's (Hurley) husband to serve her with divorce papers, but Sara makes him a better offer to serve her husband. It is all confusing and silly but Perry is funny and Hurley is gorgeous. Plus Cedric the Entertainer plays Perry's boss and he is hilarious.
As a romantic comedy, "Serving Sara" won't break any records but it is a pretty enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. All of the stars are better than expected with Cedric being outstanding.
Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon have an even better movie than "Serving Sara" and it is titled "The Banger Sisters." These two play women who at one time were "groupies." In other words they were the girls with the bands during the 60's. Now Hawn's character is still wild and crazy but Sarandon's character has opted for marriage, family and the straight life. That is until Goldie comes calling.
When lifestyles clash, which one will win? From the trailers for this film you might get the idea that wild and crazy wins out. And with Goldie being so cute and perky it is almost a given.
The film is crude and profane to the extreme, which is a shame. This makes it non-suitable for family viewing and cuts down its potential audience. But for adults, it can be a lot of fun. Hawn and Sarandon are both good in their roles and the message is overcome by the merriment.
The best action movie of the week stars Steven Seagal. He is in "The Foreigner," a movie about a man hired to deliver a package form point A to point B. There are people who don't want the package delivered and they plan to kill the delivery man.
Seagal handles the action sequences nicely and even manages to give the delivery man some humor and charm. If you like Seagal you will like "The Foreigner." If not, well don't rent it. Seagal is the movie.
Finally for the kids there is "Kippers: Playtime." This is the seventh film in the "Kipper" series. And there are seven different stories on this video. Lucky sevens all the way as Kipper and his buddies have some sweetly fun adventures. |
