"Jack Nicholson Plays An Everyman"

Jack Nicholson is just about as unique an individual as one could ever meet. Yet in his film "About Schmidt" he plays an everyman with whom all of us can relate in some form or fashion. He is seen as an average Joe who has just retired from the work force. He faces a future that is unclear and uncharted for him.

As the film, now on video, progresses, Schmidt learns that he doesn't have a strong relationship with his daughter and that he doesn't know what he needs to do to be happy. This makes for a bleak film and a depressing one.

Kathy Bates is also in the film as the mother of Jack's future son-in-law. She has a nude scene in a hot tub that will make you reach for the "Off" switch. Still she did get an Oscar nomination for her role.

Jack Nicholson was supposed to have won the Oscar for Best Actor this year but he was upset by Adrien Brody. Still his performance as "Schmidt" does have to rank with one of his finest ever. It is just the movie that is bad, not the acting

Another confusing and depressing movie is "Invincible." This film concerns a strong man and a clairvoyant in the days before Hitler's rise to power. There is also a side story about the woman torn between the two men.

Tim Roth, Jouko Ahola and Anna Gourari play the three leads and they are good in their roles. It is just that the film is so dark and so hard to understand. It may be brilliant but you'll have to work at finding that out for yourself.

On the comedy scene is "Blue Collar Comedy Tour." This is a concert film featuring Jeff Foxworthy, Ron White, Bill Engvall and Larry the Cable Guy. All four of these men have their moments but it is Ron White who starts off the show and is the funniest.

The amazing thing about these four comics is they are mostly clean in their delivery of comedic material. And that is a rarity these days. They make humor out of the most mundane situations and you can tell the audience is having a ball with them. You will be too.

"The Blue Collar Comedy Tour" is basic humor at its best. You will get a lot of laughs out of this film.

Another enjoyable movie is "The Guru." This one has a flavor of the Indian "Bollywood" musical, but it is all strictly American. Heather Graham, Marisa Tomei and Jim Mistry star in this movie about a struggling actor who gets mistaken for a spiritual guru who is also a sex guide.

The whole thing is played for laughs and fun. Graham, Tomei and Mistry seem to be having a ball with the story, the songs and the minimal plot. You will have a good time too.

For adults there is "South Park: The Complete Second Season." This is all the segments of the Comedy Channel's top rated animated series during its second season. Cartman, Kenny, Kyle, Stan and all the others are there for your entertainment pleasure. These are comedy characters that are meant for an adult audience though, so don't let the little folk watch.

Those who like this series, LOVE this series. So if you are a fan get ready to laugh along with "South Park: The Complete Second Season."

The rest of the videos out this week are meant for the kids. There is a new "Blue's Clues" titled "Shapes and Colors". Then there is a new "Dora" adventure titled "Dora the Explorer: City of Lost Toys." The popular "Kipper" is out in his first DVD and there are seven different stories in "Kipper: Fun in the Sun." And finally there is a new "Power Rangers" adventure titled "Power Rangers Ninja Storm: Prelude to a Storm."

From adults to the youngest kids, there is something for everyone at the video store this week.
