"Travolta Is the Man"

John Travolta can't get a hit to save his life. He keeps making movie after movie but that one great movie eludes him. Thank goodness he has fans like me who love him in anything he does. That includes "Basic," his new movie now on video.

In this one he plays a military investigator who tries to get to the truth about a murder. This is one of those movies where each of the central characters has a different story and it is up to the audience to try to guess which one is the real one. There are red herrings and crosses and double crosses but it all comes out at the end.

Samuel L. Jackson is the main co-star here but he and Travolta don't have but one scene together. Connie Neilsen is also in the cast and she impresses as a JAG lawyer. Tim Daly and Harry Connick, Jr. also have featured roles.

"Basic" is the type of movie that is even better on video because you can run it back and look at the scenes over and over that are confusing. So for a good evening of entertainment let's get down to "Basic."

A movie that was supposed to be one of the year's ten best, but didn't make my list, is "Gangs of New York." This movie, now on video, stars Daniel Day-Lewis and Leonardo DiCaprio as members of opposing gangs in the early days of New York City. Cameron Diaz plays the love interest.

Martin Scorcese directed the movie with heavy-handed enthusiasm. He lets it all get bogged down in subplots about various political interests and warring factions. By the end you don't care who is who and who gets killed or not.

"Gangs of New York" is an overblown saga that should've, could've been better. But it isn't!

For fans of romantic comedy there is "How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days." This lightweight movie stars Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey and they are at their charming best.

The plot is a silly trifle but who cares when the stars have this much charm and charisma. For a date night or just a romantic evening this is the one to watch with your significant other.

If you are a fan of MTV's "Real World" you might get some pleasure out of "The Real Cancun." This is a movie about spring break in Cancun and features real people who let the camera follow them around. Some of the young people are attractive looking but they all are dumb acting.

Pity the poor parents who have to watch their offspring swill alcohol and do some bed hopping. And viewing this is supposed to be entertainment!

"The Experiment" is not a documentary but it is based on a true story and features actors you have probably never seen before. The plot deals with an experiment whereby volunteers play guards and prisoners in an experimental setting. Everything is supposed to be under controlled conditions but the rules break down and havoc ensues.

This is a very dramatic movie and will hold you captive to what is going on. If you are in the mood for tense drama, well "The Experiment" is the movie you want to view.

The beautilicious Ali Larter stars with Mark Feurstein and Amy Redford in "Giving It Up." This is a light-hearted movie about a man torn between two women - one is ready and willing while the other is hard to get. Which one will he choose?

In the mood for a horror flick, then let's get "Midnight Mass." In this video the Earth has been taken over by vampires. Now it is up to a priest and an atheist to join forces to win it back. Douglas Gibson and Pamela Karp star.

Finally there is "Bob the Builder: Teamwork." In this film Bob and his partner Wendy join up with a crew of workers to show how teamwork works. There are four separate stories in this video and all of them work around that theme.
