The Perfect Concert Movie

Although it appears to be a box office bomb “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie” was the perfect concert movie. If you weren’t a fan of the show you would not be a fan of the movie, but if you were a fan of the show – or didn’t hate the show – you could have a great time watching it.

First off this was not a movie that showed a behind the scenes look at the “stars” who play the roles on TV. In this film the actors stayed in character throughout the film. If Lea Michelle was on view she was on view as Rachel Berry. The same was true of Cory Monteith as Finn, Chris Colfer as Kurt, and on and on. This enhanced the mood of the show because it was a film about the “Glee” kids actually going out on a concert tour.

Secondly the movie is one song after another. If you are going to do a concert movie then please let the performers perform, and this they do in “Glee 3D.” Each member of the cast gets a solo or duet turn except for Jenna Ushkowitz’ Tina. You hear her strong voice in one number but she is not showcased at any time.

Thirdly the added stories that are presented between the concert numbers are interesting. Three people tell their stories of how “Glee” has changed their lives. All of these stories ring true and add to the emotional content of the film. Unlike the “Jonas Brothers Concert Movie” or the “Justin Bieber” one, you don’t have to watch fake scenes of fun.

The movie is rated PG for some mild profanity and sensual dancing.

All of the voices are good with Michelle being a standout on vocal talent and Heather Morris being the most exciting dancer. Morris’ Brittany gets stiff competition from Harry Shum, Jr’s Mike while Michelle is chased for the prize by Amber Riley’s Mercedes.

Some may question why they should pay good money to see a show they can see for free on TV. Even with the 3D effects it is still the same sound you hear on TV and the same look of the characters. But it is on the large screen and it is all crisp and distinct.

If you like good music and some interesting side stories then you should see “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie.” It is the perfect one of its type, at least for me.

I scored “Glee: The 3D Concert Movie” a blended 8 out of 10.
