“The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon
Adventure” (Ken Viselman Presents)
People say that those of us who review movies have
the perfect job. Yes, we get paid to go to the movies – EVERY movie. That includes movies such as “The Oogieloves
in the Big Balloon Adventure.” This is a movie aimed supposedly at two to five year olds. Older kids would flee the
theater once things got going.
The content of the movie is fair. We have three
doll-like creatures named Goobie, Zoozie and Toofie who are the Oogieloves. They live in a house that has a talking
window named Windy (Maya Stange). Windy also has powers to reveal certain facts to them such as where five balloons
have landed after being inadvertently set free by J Edgar, the vacuum cleaner (Nick Drago).
The balloons are for the Oogieloves’ friend, a
cushion who sleeps though most of the adventure. Their task is to locate them, via Windy, and recapture them. Since
there are five balloons this leads them on five different adventures. At each locale of a balloon they meet a
character who assists them in their plans.
The characters are played by actors such as Cloris
Leachman, Chazz Palminteri, Cary Elwes, Jamie Pressly, Toni Braxton and Christopher Lloyd. Each of these actors is
a good sport and actually throws their talents into creating likeable/laughable characters. In some instances it is
a little embarrassing to see them acting so silly. At least we get a few songs to help us absorb it
all.
The movie is rated G
The movie fails not just because of the silliness,
since kids love silly. It fails because the vocabulary used in the film is too adult. “Tenacious” is not a word
little children comprehend, and there are other examples of this nature. Also the movie is too long. It runs for an
hour and a half and by this time even the most attentive child has reached his/her limit. This “child” definitely
had.
I scored “The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon
Adventure” a deflated 3 out of 10.
